Children's Services

In-House Children's Services
Lambeth Women's Aid recognises the specific needs of children who have suffered the trauma of domestic violence and aims to provide and develop services, within the refuge and through outreach work. We recognise the rights of the child as outlined in the United Nations Charter and seek to operate our services accordingly.

Group Play Sessions
To provide mother with respite and to give the children the time, opportunity and space to play. We have a well-equipped playroom where the activities enjoyed are painting, cooking, modelling, collage, drama, games, story telling, song and dance.

Individual Sessions
To enable children who are experiencing particular difficulties the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings in a safe and secure environment. The worker listens and supports the child's individual needs, e.g. self-esteem, managing behaviour, coping with anger, etc.

Parenting Sessions
The refuge has a 'no smacking' policy. Parents are supported in this through the family worker, who can suggest alternative methods of discipline. The family worker will also support mothers on a wide range of parenting issues, e.g. behavioural, vaccinations advice, educational, etc. Mothers are supported and advised through any contact proceedings that may be taking place.

Outings and Celebrations
Outings to local parks, the cinema, bowling alley, library and swimming pool are an opportunity for you and your children to have some fun. They also maintain links with the local community and help alleviate feelings of isolation.

On special occasions, such as birthdays, a special effort is made to make them an enjoyable experience. We also celebrate various festivals to heighten awareness and understanding of different cultures and religions.
